Women’s Ultimate Frisbee Finishes Strong

The uOttawa women's ultimate frisbee team remains undefeated in the Fall season. On the weekend of October 20th, the Gee-Gees played in the Hamilton Steeltown Classic hosted by McMaster University. The team went undefeated in four pool games on the rainy Saturday, beating Brock University, University of Waterloo, University of Toronto, and host team McMaster University.

Finishing at the top of their pool, the Gee-Gees advanced directly to quarter finals on Sunday, beating hometown rival Carleton Ravens early in the morning with a solid score of 14-4. In semi-final play, the Gee-Gees met McGill University, a team they had not played against since their three losses to the Martlets in Fall 2011. Starting the game off by trading points, uOttawa settled into a rhythm on offense and surged forward to achieve a 13-8 victory over McGill, paving the way to finals against Guelph. The Gee-Gees took home the gold with a score of 11-6 in hard-cap.

The team finished the Fall season with a total overall score of 168-67, winning each of their 14 games thus far. While these victories provided a great base of experience for the Gee-Gees, there is much work to be done between now and January. Players saw a shortened bench during windy games this past weekend, meaning that a lot more work on throws is needed before the team returns to competition in the winter months. The Gee-Gees are looking forward to posting their winter/spring tournament schedule as soon as it is verified.

MORE INFORMATION ON THE TEAM...

The women's ultimate team was founded in 2004 and has had many successful seasons since then. Our team has won the title of Canadian University champions (2006, 2009 and 2010), and has qualified several times for the USA Ultimate College Nationals, placing in the top 20 teams in North American women's college ultimate.

In the fall we participate in the Canadian series, which involves 2-3 tournaments. Our season continues into the winter and spring where we travel south to the US to compete in the sun, and wraps up with the American championship series.

Every year we have a mixture of skill levels on the team, ranging from those who have played in international competitions to those who have played locally to those who have never picked up a disc. We encourage everyone to come out, regardless of your experience level! We are always looking for new athletes who enjoy competition and developing their skills!

Our tryouts are held in early September. Contact ladyggultimate@gmail.com for more information as the season approaches. If you are unable to come out in the fall, but would like to participate in the winter/spring season, also send us an email!
