Hosted uOttawa Winter National Capital Invitational at the Louis Riel Dome, February 11

With just two weeks left until the OUA championships, the Gee-Gees track and field team were hoping to fine-tune their skills, while hosting the uOttawa Winter National Capital Invitational. And the Gee-Gees performed marvellously at their first home meet in almost a month, earning nine total first-place finishes on February 11. Leading the way for the nationally second-ranked men’s team was the 4x200m relay team, composed of veterans Oluwasegun Makinde (Ottawa, Ont.), Moussa Sissoko (Paris, France), Devin Biocchi (Ottawa, Ont.), and Michael Robertson (Williamstown, Ont.). The relay team earned first place, in a time of 1:25.28, over a full second faster than their previous best time of 1:26.80. The 4x200m team broke the uOttawa school record, and is currently the top-ranked relay team in the CIS.

The nationally-ninth ranked women’s team also had a nice day at the Louis Riel Dome, with fifth-year middle distance runner Jennifer Perrault (Burlington, Ont.) breaking a school record in the 600m event, with a time of 1:29.91. Another veteran, Julia Tousaw (Goderich, Ont.), finished right behind Perrault in second place, with a time of 1:31.60. Other highlights included a first-place finish for the women’s 4x400m relay team, spearheaded by Tousaw and Perrault, and also a second-place showing for third-year sprinter Sarah De Carufel (Boisbriand, Qué.) in the 60m dash.

On the men’s side, Makinde and Sissoko ended up virtually tied for first place in the 60m sprint, with Makinde edging out his teammate by 0.002 seconds. Third-year Remy Binns (Oshawa, Ont.) was first in the men’s 1500m run, while rookie Sekou Kaba (Conakry, Guinea) won the 60m hurdles event—with teammate Mark Chenery (Victoria, BC) finishing just behind Kaba, in second place.
